The National Road was America's first federal highway, stretching from Maryland to Illinois. It was completed in 1840, after 29 years of work, and sections of it still remain intact. The museum contains a 136-foot diorama, and life-size reconstructions of scenes along the National Road.
Exhibits on transportation range from miniature models and dioramas to life-size displays and actual vehicles, aircraft, and trains. Focus is on Army vehicles, as this is the museum for Fort Eustis, headquarters for the Army's Transportation Corps.
