Barnwell is one of only a few commercial radioactive waste disposal facilities in the country. It is next to the DOE's Savannah River Site, one of the largest nuclear technology locations in the nation. The 300-acre Barnwell facility accepts dry, low-level radioactive waste from all over the country, and entombs it in mounds. It opened in 1971, and is operated by ChemNuclear Systems, for many years by a subsidiary of Waste Management Incorporated.
