Big Ear Radio Observatory Site, Ohio

An unusual and extremely large antenna consisting of a 500-foot-long flat array, built on the ground, and two vertical reflectors on either end. Built by Ohio State University, it became the first dedicated SETI (Search for Extra-Terrestrial Intelligence) facility in 1973, and was used to search for extraterrestrial radio signals until 1995, making it the longest-running full-scale SETI project. What became known as the WOW signal was recorded there on August 15, 1977, which prompted greater interest in the SETI project. It was dismantled in 1998 to make way for a golf course. However there are some displays about it at the Perkins Observatory (which was spared by the golf course).
