Desert of Maine, Maine

A 40-acre sandy desert, within the pine forests of Maine, which has been exploited as a tourist attraction. The sandy patch appeared as a result of the topsoil being eroded away from land clearing, overgrazing, and other bad farming practices that took place there throughout the 1800's, ultimately exposing the glacial silt beneath. The tourist attraction includes cement camels, narrated tours in a wagon pulled by a jeep, and a gift shop. It is located near the outlet store town of Freeport, down the road from LL Bean.
