DOE Nevada Operations Center, Nevada

Sometimes called the Atlas Site, this is the base of operations for the Department of Energy in Nevada and the Pacific Ocean, and the main administrative, research, and engineering complex for the primary contractor at the Nevada Test Site, Bechtel, Nevada (until 1996 it was EG&G, for over 40 years). Structures include a multi-story high-bay engineering tower, visible from Interstate 15, which was built to assemble the tall "engineering packages" that were the standard test device for underground nuclear testing. For many years, the Nevada Operations Office of the Department of Energy was located on Highland Avenue, behind the Circus Circus casino, before it moved to a new building on the Atlas Site in 1997. Also at the Atlas Site is the public information center, (called the CIC), where many of the documents relating to US nuclear testing can be viewed.
