Dutch Harbor Naval Base, Alaska

During WWII there were 11 military installations on this remote island in the Aleutian Chain, covering approximately 188,420 acres. The primary installation was the Dutch Harbor Navy Base, which was attacked by Japanese aircraft in 1942, but was only partially damaged. The base is now abandoned, and much of this island is littered with debris from this short-lived, but extensive military presence. Amaknak Island, part of Unalaska where Dutch Harbor is located, now has one of the most productive fishing ports in the country, and supports a population of around 4,000. Much of the old Navy facilities are now developed by the fishing industry.
