Ellington Field, Texas

A 1,500-acre military and civilian air field used by the Air Force, NASA, McDonnell Douglas, Northrop Grummann, and UPS. The Texas Air National Guard as well as the Texas Army National Guard are both tenants. Once a full Air Force Base, the field was acquired by the City of Houston in 1984. In 2009, the Houston City Council elected to change the base's name from Ellington Field to Ellington Airport. In 2014, Sierra Nevada Corporation, developer of a low-Earth orbit space plane called the Dream Chaser, entered into an agreement with airport management, to research the feasibility of using Ellington Airport as a spaceport to service returning commercial flights.
