FEMA New England Headquarters, Massachusetts

The Federal Emergency Management Agency's regional operations center for New England is housed in this underground bunker in Maynard, outside Boston. Built in the early 1960's, when the agency was more concerned about nuclear attacks than it is now, the bunker has an operations room for organizing emergency relief teams throughout the six New England states, and a variety of communications antennas on the roof of the building. Next door is a large equipment shed containing the fleet of the Mobile Emergency Response Detachment, which include truck-mounted emergency communications, electrical generating equipment, and water purification plants, capable of turning even salt water into drinking water. There are ten FEMA regions covering the country, and there are five Mobile bases, each serving two of the ten regions. New England is Region 1.
