FEMA New England Headquarters, Massachusetts

The Federal Emergency Management Agency's regional operations center for New England is housed in this underground bunker in Maynard. Built in the 1950's, when the agency was more concerned about nuclear attacks than it is now, the bunker has an operations room for organizing emergency relief teams throughout the six New England states, and a variety of communications antennas on the roof of the building. Next door is a large equipment shed containing truck-mounted emergency communications and electrical generating equipment. The state also has an emergency management agency (MEMA), which is housed in a similar, but smaller bunker on Route 9, near Framingham.
