Fort Gillem, Georgia

Known at one time as the Atlanta Army Depot, until its rechristening as Fort Gillem in 1973. Its large warehouse structures and railway access once dominated the landscape. The site was once home to the First U.S. Army, the Georgia Army National Guard, the U.S. Army Criminal Investigation Command, the Third Military Police Group, the Second Recruiting Brigade, the Fifty-Second Ordnance Group (specializing in explosive ordinance disposal), and the Federal Emergency Management (FEMA) headquarters for the Southeast. The 1,452-acre installation was officially closed in 2011, while the major criminal and forensic lab facilities housed there remain open and are still used by all branches of military and some law enforcement. The bulk of the site is now being developed as an industrial/business park by The Urban Redevelopment Agency of the City of Forest Park.
