Fort Ord, California

Fort Ord closed in 1994 and is no longer officially an infantry training base, though training operations by the military still take place at several locations. Its 28,000 acres on California's Central Coast are currently home to California State University Monterey Bay, Fort Ord National Monument (comprising more than half of the former base), Fort Ord Dunes State Park, a Veteran's Transition Center, and a hostel. Development plans call for housing, retail stores, and perhaps a race track. The Army is retaining parts of the base for several functions, including annexes for the Defense Language Institute and the Presidio of Monterey. Several contaminated and unexploded ordnance areas within the former base are fenced off and continuously monitored, while cleanup efforts are ongoing. The hope is that all unexploded ordnance will be found and removed by 2022.
