Grand Forks Air Force Base, North Dakota

A former bomber and refueling base and missile defense base, then a former Minuteman missile support base, Grand Forks has around 5,000 acres, and still employs a few thousand people. Though the missile functions were transferred to Malmstrom AFB, Montana, in the late 1990's, it has become a major drone base. As of May 2011, RQ-4 Global Hawk unmanned aerial vehicle surveillance aircraft have been assigned there. In 2019, US Customs and Border Protection's Air and Marine Operations opened a new National Air Security Operations Center at Grand Forks, to support the Department of Homeland Security's national Global Hawk surveillance drone operations.
