Gray Butte UAV Flight Operations Facility, California

Gray Butte may be the largest private unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) airport in the USA. It is General Atomics' main test center, where the company’s Predator and Reaper UAVs are regularly flown. The company has operated for years out of the nearby El Mirage Lake airport, which it developed with the CIA, and still uses as well. Originally, Gray Butte was a radar cross-section test facility, built in the 1970s by McDonnell Douglas, and taken over by Boeing (which bought McDonnell Douglas), and then closed by 1999, and put up for sale, and bought by General Atomics, which converted it to its present function.
