Hibbing Taconite Plant, Minnesota
The plant that operates at the fulcrum between the Hull Rust Mahoning Pit and its even bigger tailings impoundment is owned by Hibbing Taconite, which makes taconite for the steel industry there. As with most of the other half dozen or so current operations in the Iron Range, the taconite is shipped by rail to Duluth, where it travels by ship to steel plants. Hibbing Taconite is owned by a few companies, chiefly ArcelorMittal, the Indian steel company that is currently one of the largest producers of steel in the USA. Cliffs Natural Resources and United States Steel are also partners.
