Maine Yankee Nuclear Power Plant Site, Maine

Built in 1972, this was Maine's only nuclear power plant. It was decommissioned in 1997, and was dismantled over an eight year period, at a cost of over $500 million. The reactor vessel was shipped by barge to the nuclear waste storage facility at Barnwell, South Carolina, in 2003. Most of the site has been razed, but the spent fuel rods remain on site, at a high-security dry cask storage pad, awaiting placement in a long term repository, yet to be constructed. The 900 MW plant was operated by the Maine Yankee Atomic Power Company.
