McConnell Air Force Base, Kansas

A major refueling base for military aircraft, using its fleet of Boeing KC-135 Stratotanker airplanes. From 1960 to 1986, McConnell was a support and refueling center for the 18 Titan II Intercontinental Ballistic Missile silos installed in the area. B1-B bombers were based here until a tornado destroyed parts of the base in 1991, and the Air Force moved the billion dollar bombers to Dyess AFB. The base is also home to the Kansas Air National Guard's 184th Intelligence Wing.
