Morgan City Tethered Aerostat-Borne Radar System (TARS) Site, Louisiana

Although not currently in use, at one time the Morgan City aerostat was part of a network of inflated static aircraft (aerostats) that are raised aloft and cabled in place (tethered), for use as radar stations along the USA/Mexico border. Operated by the US Customs and Border Protection, TARS' primary mission is to detect small aircraft entering into the country from the south. The system currently employs around eight of the unmanned aerostats, in locations stretching from Yuma, Arizona to Lajas, Puerto Rico.
