Mound City, Chillicothe, Ohio

This site, one of hundreds of mound locations throughout the midwest, has been preserved and restored by the National Park Service, to represent what remains of the Hopewell Culture mounds, created during a few centuries BC. The majority of the mounds in America were destroyed during the European settlement of the country, as they were considered a nuisance by farmers and developers, leaving mostly the large mounds and mound complexes, like this one, intact. During WWI, a military base was built on this site (a veritable city as well, with 2,000 buildings and 40,000 soldiers, an activity which further destroyed many of the mounds).
