Naturita Uranium Mill Site, Colorado

Uranium mill site, cleaned up by the DOE as part of the Uranium Mill Tailings Remedial Action Project. The mill operated from the 1930s to 1963. In 1942, the mill became one of two in the USA used to produce uranium for the Manhattan Project. Remediation operations left some radioactive mill tailings in place (contained within on-site mounds), while other tailings were transferred to a disposal cell one mile from Uravan, 15 miles northwest, where the DOE moved 800,000 cubic yards of material between 1993 and 1997.
