Patuxent River Naval Air Station
Located on a peninsula on Chesapeake Bay, Patuxent River Naval Air Station is one of the nation's premier facilities for the test and evaluation of advanced weapons systems, with emphasis on those used in Naval aviation applications. Site of the Naval Air Test Center, and Naval Air Warfare Center, Aircraft Division (which has a sister site, the Naval Air Warfare Center, Weapons Division at China Lake, California). Facilities at "Pax River" include: more than 19 hangars and chambers where whole aircraft are serviced, modified, and subjected to a variety of tests, from electromagnetic pulses to lightning strikes; radar-cross section facilities; aircraft carrier deck test facilities; and extensive test range and target areas, some shared with other defense installations, including 14,000 acres of land, 7,400 square miles of test ranges and 50,000 square miles of controlled airspace.
