Plattsburgh Air Force Base, New York

Plattsburgh was a major military base starting as early as 1814, until 1995, when it was closed by BRAC. At that time it was a base for medium range bombers, and a refueling wing, and had 4,000 active duty military personnel. It is located at the northeast corner of New York, on Lake Champlain. It is now been redeveloped as an industrial park and a civilian airport. In 1961 the base became the headquarters for a field of 12 Atlas F ICBM silos, built within a 50 mile radius of the base (ten in upstate New York, two in Vermont). The Atlas F program was soon canceled, in 1964, and the silos deactivated.
