Presque Isle Air Force Base, Maine

Former military base now converted to a civilian airport. In early 1960, the base became the nation's only SNARK missile site, when the first of its kind was put into service. The SNARK was a long-range, nuclear-capable, cruise missile, with a length of 65 feet. They were designed to be launched from mobile missile launchers, and though they had a range of over 6,000 miles, they proved to be tremendously inaccurate. By early 1961, then newly elected President John F. Kennedy, decided to cancel further expansion of the SNARK missile program, due to its abysmal performance, as reported by the Strategic Air Command. The former base is now the Northern Maine Regional Airport. The Skyway Industrial Park is also to be found on site.
