Ravenna Depot, Ohio

At 21,418 acres, this is the largest military landscape in Ohio. Like most other military sites in the country, it was established around World War II. Extensive facilities at the site manufactured and stored explosives during and after the War, including cartridges, mines, and TNT. Today, many of the original 623 munitions storage igloos still store explosives, but weapons assembly at the site ceased in 1992. The non-production areas are now used primarily by the Ohio National Guard as a training site, for maneuvers that include tanks and aircraft. The most industrialized 5,000 acres are slowly being addressed by the military for possible remediation, as the site is heavily contaminated.
