Robert W Scherer Power Plant, Georgia

The Robert W Scherer Power Plant is one of the largest coal-fired power plants in the U.S., and of the largest of any kind, in terms of electricity generation. Comprised of four independent 880 megawatt units, yielding around 3,300 megawatts total. When all four units operate at full power, the plant burns 11 million tons of coal per year. The plant has been ranked as the worst emitter of carbon dioxide in the country, producing  as much as 20 million metric tons of CO2 annually. It is owned by the Georgia Power Company, which itself is owned by one the largest electrical utilities in the country, the Southern Company, based in Atlanta. More than 400 of the approximately 7,000 power plants in the United States use coal.
