Vermont Yankee Nuclear Power Plant, Vermont

Vermont Yankee, the state’s only nuclear power plant, is located in Vernon, Vermont, across the Connecticut River from New Hampshire, and just a few miles upstream of Massachusetts. The plant has a single boiling water reactor, with a capacity of generating 605MW, more than 70% of the electricity generated in Vermont. The plant operated from 1972 until its final shutdown in 2014. It was originally owned by Vermont Yankee Nuclear Power Corporation, until its sale to Entergy, in 2002. In 2013, Entergy announced its intention to close the plant due to various financial issues. In December of 2014, the plant ceased operations, and by January 2015, all of the reactor's spent fuel had been successfully transferred to the Spent Fuel Pool. Over the course of 2018, all of the now cooler spent fuel was transferred to above ground dry storage casks, where it will remain indefinitely. The rest of the plant will slowly be disassembled, decontaminated, and decommissioned.
