Route 58 Self-Guided Tour

862 In 2000, the Center published a self-guided tour book for a highway in Southern California. Route 58: A Cross-Section of California is a guide to unusual and exemplary land use along the highway which connects Barstow, in the heart of the High Desert, to Santa Margarita, near the coast. Route 58 is a road that goes east-west, across the generally north-south grain of the state. As such it is an interesting cross-section of the state, touching on remarkable sites in the desert, the Central Valley, the oil fields, and the coastal mountains.
