The Coast Realty Archive is created from the contents of Coast Realty, a small real estate office which operated out of a storefront on Venice Boulevard in Los Angeles from the 1950s to the 1990s. After the office closed, it sat shuttered and mostly untouched for nearly 20 years, a kind of time capsule, gathering dust. When the space was cleared out in 2019, the files were spared from destruction and preserved for posterity by the Center for Land Use Interpretation. This includes thousands of obsolete real estate listings on letter-sized sheets of paper, most dating from the late 1950s to the mid-1960s, each with a photograph depicting the featured property from the street. The archive provides a portrait of landscape of the west side of Los Angeles at a time when the city was surging with growth and possibility.
