Paper Mills of the USA

The USA dominated world paper production throughout the 20th century, starting with water-powered mills located on rivers in the timberlands of the upper Midwest and Northeast. As the century progressed, paper, like other mill-industries, moved south, where production plants powered by electricity and gas, instead of water, could grow into huge operations, feeding on southern forests.  Some of the old mills of the north still produce paper, but it is the Deep South, from Arkansas to South Carolina, where the biggest pulp and paper mills are today.
