A Mojave Microcosm
The Harper Lake Basin is both a typical and extraordinary Mojave Desert landscape. The region around the dry lake contains remarkable places that are superlative in the world, like a vast futuristic solar electric generating stations on the western shore - and seemingly mundane, like the collapsing homesteads on the eastern edge. The valley contains the full spectrum of land use in the Mojave, from large to small, and from constructive to destructive, energy production, dried out farms, and airplane crash sites. In this context we can see these places as elements of a larger cultural process, where out of phase cycles of formation and disintegration are woven into a pattern on the ground that is evident around us.
