Androscoggin Pulp and Paper Mill, Maine

The Androscoggin Mill, on the Androscoggin River, in Jay, Maine, was built by International Paper in the early 1960s. It covers almost a square mile, and employs around 500 people, making coated and uncoated specialty paper, used in magazines, labels, and other commercial printing applications. It was bought from its previous owner, the Verso Corporation, by Pixelle Specialty Solutions, in 2020, making Pixelle the largest producer of specialty paper in the USA (using this and its three other mills, in Ohio, Pennsylvania, and Wisconsin). In April, 2020, two of the pulp digesters at the mill blew up, an event captured by the dashcams of lined up logging trucks. Amazingly, no one was injured, and the plant was soon back online, while completing repairs. The mill is one of a half dozen or so large paper mills still operating in Maine.
