Bangor Naval Submarine Base, Washington
Bangor Sub Base is the primary nuclear missile submarine base on the West Coast (covering the Pacific, just as the sub base at Kings Bay Georgia covers the Atlantic). It has one of the largest collections of nuclear weapons in the country, with approximately 1,700 Trident missiles either stored at its hill-top depot, or onboard its fleet of eight Trident submarines which roam the seas on secret missions. The base covers over 7,000 acres on the shores of Hood Canal, in Puget Sound, and was activated as a sub base in 1977, after being established as a munitions depot in World War Two. In 2004, Naval Submarine Base Bangor merged with Naval Station Bremerton to form Naval Base Kitsap, now the official name for both bases. It is among the largest military bases in the nation.
