Barking Sands Missile Range Site, Hawaii
Pacific Missile Range Facility Barking Sands is a rocket and missile test facility on the western edge of the island of Kauai. The seven-mile-long coastal installation is used by the Navy and Army as a ground station on the Pacific Missile Range, a military operations range that covers over 1,100 square miles of instrumented sea range, and 42,000 square miles of controlled air space. Facilities on the base include a 6,000 foot long runway and numerous telemetry and radar facilities to monitor missile, ship, and submarine activities on the range. Also located on the base is the Kauai Test Facility, operated by Sandia National Laboratory, which conducts nuclear weapons-related research and development.
