Barry Power Plant, Alabama

Barry Power Plant is located in Bucks, Alabama, adjacent to the Mobile River, from which it draws its cooling water. From 1954 to 1971, five coal-fired units were brought online, followed by 5 gas-fired units, all of which were operational by 2001. In 2015, coal-fired Units 1 and 2 were converted to natural gas, while Unit 3 was retired altogether, leaving only Units 4 and 5 as coal-fired. The plant is home to 9 units: seven gas-fired ones whose net output capacity is 1,379MW, and 2 coal-fired ones whose net output capacity is 1,191MW, yielding a combined net output capacity of 2,570MW. The plant is owned and operated by Alabama Power Company, a subsidiary of Southern Company.
