Boeing Main Assembly Plant, Washington

Often cited as the “largest building in the world,” Boeing’s aircraft assembly building in Everett, Washington, where commercial airliners including the 747 were built, encloses 472,370,000 cubic feet above a footprint of 4,280,000 square feet. It is much larger than most aircraft manufacturing sheds, and is the largest building in the USA, by most ways of measuring. The Everett Plant was built in 1966, to produce the first 747s for the commercial market. It sits next to another building with 1,200,000 square feet and 131,000,000 cubic feet, built to make wings for the 777 aircraft, which is also one of the largest buildings in the nation, by volume. With the 737 and 757 built at the Renton plant, Boeing builds more commercial jetliners than any other company, and though it moved its headquarters from Seattle to Chicago, in 2001, its aircraft production is still based at three sites in Washington State.
