Callaway Nuclear Power Plant, Missouri

The Callaway Nuclear Power Plant is Missouri’s only nuclear power plant. It  lies 10 miles southeast of Fulton, Missouri, 5 miles north of the Missouri River, the source of its cooling water, via a buried pipeline. It is home to a single pressurized water reactor, whose output capacity is around 1,215MW.  It is owned by the  Ameren Corporation. The plant's operating license was issued in 1984. The facility includes an Independent Spent Fuel Storage Installation (ISFSI), which is unusual in that unlike the majority of ISFSI's which rely on dry casks stored above ground, Callaway has chosen to employ Holtec International's HI-STORM UMAX system, in which the containers of spent reactor fuel are stored upright in cavities within a thick-walled concrete enclosure, buried  underground. A 553-ft tall cooling tower is also to be found on site.
