Cape Hattaras Lighthouse, North Carolina
Image
The Cape Hatteras Lighthouse was built in 1879, and at 198 feet high is one of the tallest in country. More notable is the fact that over the summer of 1999, the unreinforced brick lighthouse was moved 2,900 feet, fully intact (very, very slowly) to get it safely to a more inland location, out of the way of the eroding shoreline. It is one of several lighthouses along the Outer Banks of North Carolina, a region known for many shipwrecks over the years.
