Chanute Air Force Base, Illinois
A 2,125-acre Air Force Base now closed, and undergoing clean-up. Chanute was constructed in 1917 as a storage site and training base. Technical training continued until 1993, when all military operations ceased, and the base began to be converted to civilian use. Chanute was the primary maintenance training center for the Minuteman ICBM program from 1961 to its closure in 1993. While various support facilities remain intact, White Hall (a 400,000-square-foot multi-purpose building built in 1941), was demolished in 2016.
