Chocolate Mountains Aerial Gunnery Range, California
This is a 456,000 acre impact range covering most of the Chocolate Mountain Range in California, located on the east side of the Salton Sea. It has five primary target areas, used to train for things like Close Air Support, with live ordnance mostly on the north side of the mountains. The within these areas the targets are mostly vehicular, simulating armored columns, convoys, and tank brigades, though there are simulated airstrips, and some simulated surface-to-air missile sites, radar sites, and infantry sites, as well as simulated bunker sites and enemy headquarters, made with things like shipping containers. The range is managed as part of the Marine Corps Yuma Training Range Complex, which includes the western part of the Barry Goldwater Range.
