Cooper Nuclear Power Plant, Nebraska

Cooper Nuclear Power Plant is located in Brownville, Nebraska, adjacent to the Missouri River, the source of its cooling water. The plant is home to a single boiling water reactor, whose output capacity is 769MW, making it the largest single-unit generator of electricity in the state. The plant's operating license was issued in 1974. It is operated by Entergy Nuclear Operations, Inc., on behalf of owner Nebraska Public Power District. In 1998, Cooper became the first nuclear power plant in the U.S. to receive fuel produced under the terms of the Megatons to Megawatts Program, in which (over the course of twenty years), high-enriched uranium taken from older Russian nuclear warheads was converted into low-enriched uranium, and then sold to the United States for use as nuclear reactor fuel.
