Cray Computers Chippewa Falls, Wisconsin
Cray Computers has built some of the most advanced computers in the world in Chippewa Falls, which has been the main production plant for the company since it was founded by Seymour Cray in 1972. These supercomputers, starting with the Cray-1, which was the fastest computer in the world in the 1970s, have been used in science, defense, and by the NSA, and their ownership was considered the mark of a truly elite entity, since they were so advanced, rare, and expensive. The company has been bought and sold and reformed many times over the years, and was purchased by Hewlett Packard in 2019, and based in Seattle, though this remains Cray’s main USA production plant, located as it is in Seymour Cray’s hometown.
