Cut Bank Air Force Station, Montana

Located just a few miles south of the Canadian Border, this radar site operated from 1951 to 1965. It is a former General Surveillance Radar Station, one of 28 of this type set up along the nation’s perimeter, around 1951, during the Korean War, to monitor air traffic coming into the USA. It became part of the SAGE (Semi Automatic Ground Environment System) in 1961. SAGE was the continental yet centralized early warning system that revolutionized computing technology, as well as defended the nation against attack. This facility also operated two small “Gap Filler” radar sites, at Browning and Sweetgrass, Montana. It is now privately owned and not functional, but many building remain on the site.
