The Dalton Highway is a mostly gravel road 414 miles long, which follows the Trans-Alaskan Pipeline, for the portion between Prudhoe Bay and Fairbanks. Known as the Haul Road, it was built in 1974 to build the pipeline. The southern origin of the Dalton Highway, technically, is 84 miles north of Fairbanks in the town of Livengood. The official north terminus of the road is Deadhorse, a community of 1,500 oil workers, just south of Prudhoe Bay. The road is open year-round but is not always passable. Maximum distance between gas stations is 244 miles.
