Delta Gathering Station, Louisiana
The Delta Gathering Station, operated by Targa Resources for many years, is the largest of a few gas collection facilities on top of the Venice Salt Dome, located at the end of the Mississippi River. It is a collecting point for gas lines in the region, bringing gas from off shore generating wells, where it is refined and put into a pipeline that takes the gas inland, to be distributed as part of the national grid. The Delta Gathering Station, and its adjacent facilities, use more than a dozen cavities hydraulically mined into the salt dome, for underground storage with more than 20 million barrels capacity. The area is locally known as the wagon wheel, as its flooded pipeline channels form a circle around the edge of the dome.
