Desert Test Range Master Control / Target 101, California

The Desert Test Range is a restricted area used for target practice by the Marine Corps and the Navy. It is administered by the Yuma Marine Corps Air Station in Arizona. Several targets are located within the restricted area, which is on the west side of the Imperial Valley. Target 101 is the main target, and is used in air-to-ground bombing, rocket, and strafing exercises. It is a 40-foot diameter bull's eye target with four concentric rings of 75, 100, 300, and 2000-foot radii. Ordnance impacts are scored remotely by a Weapons Impact Scoring Set (WISS) whose operator is located in Master Control (Bldg 5000). The target area is equipped with electric lights for night deliveries. Ordnance is limited to inert MK 76 and MK 106 practice bombs, and inert 2.75-inch Folding Fin Aerial Rockets (FFARs). Bomb Dummy Unit (BDU) deliveries are authorized within the Target 101 area, but not on the primary target areas. Night flare drops for bombing are authorized. The BDU Target is located 51'4 NMI northwest of the main bull's-eye, and the Strafing Target is a dirt mound located east of the main bull's-eye adjacent to the MLT track. Scoring is accomplished by a DA-3H Acousti-score system whose operator is located in Master Control. The MLT (Mobile Land Target) track is located 5000-feet east of the main target. It runs on a northwest-southeast track 4000-feet long and 500-feet wide. Inert MK 76 and BDU 48 authorized. No strafing or rockets may be fired at the MLT.
