Destruction Island, Washington

Destruction Island is a soggy, mist-enshrouded outpost three miles off the coast of the Olympic Peninsula. In 1968, when the Coast Guard declared its intention to close the 19th century lighthouse and support buildings, romantic public sentiment prevailed, and instead the light was automated. The lighthouse remained in use until 2008, when the Coast Guard decided to turn it off for good.
