Double Eagle II Balloon Launch Site, Maine

The first hot air balloon to cross the Atlantic left from this site a few miles west of the international boundary with Canada, near Spragueville, Maine. A small park and memorial have been constructed at the site. The Double Eagle II hot air balloon took off for its historic flight in the summer of 1978, and landed six days later later, near Paris, France. Its pilots would go on to found the International Balloon Museum in Albuquerque, and the big annual ballooning festival there.
