Edwin I. Hatch Nuclear Plant, Georgia
The Edwin I. Hatch Nuclear Power Plant sits on a 2,244-acre site, along the banks of the Altamaha River, from which it draws its cooling water. It was the first nuclear power plant built in Georgia. The plant is home to two boiling water reactors, with each reactor possessing an output capacity of 924MW. Unit 1's operating license was issued in 1974, while Unit 2's operating license was issued in 1978. The plant is operated by Southern Nuclear on behalf of co-owners Georgia Power (50.1%), Oglethorpe Power Corporation (30%), Municipal Electrical Authority of Georgia (17.7%), and Dalton Utilities (2.2%). In 2018, Unit 1 became the first commercial reactor in the U.S. to test newer types of fuel developed by the U.S. Department of Energy, which are said to be more accident tolerant.
