Eldorado Air Force Station, Texas

A massive radar array stands abandoned at this remote site south of San Angelo, known as the Eldorado Air Force Station. This antenna was one of four in a unique early-warning system that used phased-array radar, housed in large pyramidal structures called PAVE PAWS. One antenna on Cape Cod looked over the Atlantic, another in California looked over the Pacific, and this one looked southward. The site once had a staff of around 160 people, and was associated with Goodfellow Air Force Base, 35 miles north. It sent most of its data to the Cheyenne Mountain Air Force station in Colorado Springs, Colorado, until its closure in 1995. A portion of the radar equipment was moved to Clear Air Force Station, Alaska, and was incorporated into the Ballistic Missile Early Warning System antenna there.
