Elmendorf Air Force Base was joined with nearby Fort Richardson to become Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson, in 2005. With around 13,000 people on the base, this is the largest military installation in the state, in terms of population. It is adjacent to the state's largest city, Anchorage. The joint base is comprised of around 85,000 acres, with a host of buildings and facilities, including a 40-acre antenna, used by the 381st Intelligence Squadron, responsible for providing "command, control, and communications counter-measure deception training and support" to the Armed Forces community.
