As a plaque at this site notes, in 1902, while working for the United States Weather Bureau, radio pioneer Reginald Aubrey Fessenden successfully transmitted both voice and music from a radio tower on Cape Hatteras to his laboratory on Roanoke Island, ushering in a new era of radio communication in North America.
