Ford Flat Rock Assembly Plant, Michigan

Ford’s Flat Rock Plant, south of Detroit, makes the Ford Mustang and Lincoln Continental, and is one of eight or so Ford auto assembly plants in the USA. It opened in 1972 as the Michigan Casting Center, a state of the art and massive metal casting plant for making engine blocks and other cast parts for Ford vehicles, which closed in 1981, with declining demand for large-engined cars. Mazda built a new assembly plant at the site that opened in 1987. Ford entered into a partnership with Mazda in 1992, and the plant made Ford and Mazda cars until 2012, when the partnership ended and Ford took over the plant to make the Ford Fusion.
